A1 Steak Sauce Cake

So the birthday kid really likes A1 Steak Sauce.  I mentioned I could make that into a cake for his birthday.  He said that was a great idea.  So I did.

I started with a 12×18 sheet cake and cut it in half length-wise.  Then I stacked the two pieces.  The actual bottle, laid down, is as tall as it is wide.  Since that would be too much cake, I decided to decorate it as if it were just half of the bottle coming out of the board.  It worked.  I only had to carve out the neck.  A1 was very nice in their package design.  Square products make easy cakes.  Here is a picture of the cake after I carved it and coated it with buttercream.

After the buttercream was in the fridge for a couple of hours, I did the first layer of fondant.  I used Satin Ice dark chocolate fondant.  I think the color really matched well with the bottle.  The dark chocolate fondant tastes a bit like a Tootsie Roll.

After that, I measured and cut out some white fondant to be the paper labels and the cap.

For the big A1 letters, I printed out the logo to the right size and used that as a template.  My helper cut the letters out of red fondant and the blue medallion out of blue fondant.  The white lettering on top is just piped royal icing.  I had some fun marking the “Net WT” part.  I weight the cake with a kitchen scale.  Hehe.  To make the gold border, I mixed some yellow color powder with brown color powder and gold pearl dust.  I blended that all with some orange extract and it made a nice paint.  We matched the color of the bottle and just used a paint brush that I keep only for sugar work.

I made the bottle shiny by painting the exposed chocolate fondant with a light coat of water.  A tiny bit of water brushed on to fondant will make it shiny.  Be careful when trying this because it also makes fondant very sticky.
